MSNBC contributor and former Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) on Tuesday defended Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley, saying he was trying to “defend democracy” by subverting former President Donald Trump. Opining in a segment on Morning Joe on the revelation that former Vice President Mike Pence conferred with one of his predecessors, Dan Quayle, for advice on whether he could follow the law while appeasing Trump’s demand that he try to overturn the 2020 presidential election, McCaskill said, “Trump started calling him out to the insurrection crowd, and they marched on the Capitol with flag poles to gouge out the eyes of police officers, shouting to hang Mike Pence.
